The formula

SV% = saves ÷ shots on goal faced = (shots faced - goals against) ÷ shots faced

Worked example

A goalie faces 24 shots on goal and allows 3 goals, so 21 saves: SV% = 21 ÷ 24 = 0.875. Enter those two numbers in the calculator to see the result appear and color itself by level.

The classic SV% trap: only shots ON GOAL count, never missed shots or shots blocked by a defenseman. A shot that hits the post without going in counts as a missed shot, not a save, a distinction that plenty of people tracking stats get wrong without realizing it. The calculator itself cannot catch this upstream error: it trusts the numbers entered, so the rigor happens at the moment of logging the game, not at the moment of calculating. A game where missed and on-goal shots get mixed up skews SV% in either direction depending on the mistake made.

SV% reads very differently by level. In the NHL, a good save percentage sits around .910 and an excellent one tops .920. In youth and junior hockey, benchmarks drop and vary far more: between .850 and .900 is generally considered solid, because defenses are less structured and quality chances more frequent. The same goalie can post .930 in a weak league and .870 in a strong one without their real ability changing one bit: league context matters as much as the number itself, and comparing two goalies from different leagues on SV% alone almost always misleads. The only honest comparison stays between goalies in the same league, same age group and a similar shot volume.

Over a single game, SV% swings wildly: one goal on 8 shots already gives 87.5%, and a shutout on 10 shots does not mean much either, variance dominates over such a small sample. It becomes meaningful after about ten games measured with the same rigor. What is a good save percentage in youth hockey?

Between .850 and .900 is generally solid in youth and junior hockey, versus .910 and up in the NHL. The real benchmark is comparison at an equal level, not an absolute number.

Do blocked shots count toward SV%?

No. Only shots on goal (ones that would have gone in without the goalie's stop) enter the calculation. A shot blocked by a defenseman or missing the net affects neither shots faced nor saves.
