How to choose

Most sports stat tracking apps were built for baseball first, then extended to other sports as a secondary feature. That works fine for a bit of everything, but it misses what makes hockey, ball hockey and ringette different: short, fast games, play that happens as much on the blue line as in front of the net, and often a single parent in the stands trying to track their own kid, not the whole team.

Before choosing, ask three questions. Who is actually going to enter the stats: one designated team scorekeeper, or you, from your own seat? Does the app really work with no signal, in the concrete basement of an arena? And does the price match what you'll actually use, without paying for video or team management if that's not what you're after.

The duels below compare RinkLog to other apps, criterion by criterion, with each app's real strengths named honestly. The point isn't to win every row: it's to help you pick the tool that fits your sport, your player's age group, U7 to U21, and the way you track them.

Which app for which situation

  • Parent of a U9 player

RinkLog on the free plan: four buttons (goal, assist, shot, shift) are enough, and measured ice time already tells you something real. MyPlayer also does the job if English only is fine.

  • Parent of a goalie

RinkLog: location of every shot, danger zones, rebounds, quality starts. It is the only app on the list with a verified full goalie mode; MyPlayer tracks goalies with totals.

  • U15 AAA player who wants trends

RinkLog Premium: blocked shots, faceoffs, scoring chances, EV/PP/PK situation, percentile benchmarks. If the team already has Hudl, keep it for video and RinkLog for the logbook.

  • Team coach

GameChanger or TeamSnap, honestly, or BenchIQ if you want to score from the bench on a tablet with a live feed for the families. A coach wants the roster, the schedule, messaging and a team sheet; RinkLog tracks one player, not a bench. MadPuck if several parents want to share the entry.

  • Beer league

A shared scoresheet, or HockeyShift if the league already pays for a website. RinkLog suits the adult player who wants their own history, not the league that wants standings.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free hockey stats app?

It depends on who tracks the stats. For a parent following their own child, RinkLog and MyPlayer both offer a free plan for one player; RinkLog is the only one of the two in French and with ringette and ball hockey. For a team, MadPuck is free with ads and GameChanger is free for team staff.

Is there a hockey stats app for one player only?

Yes. RinkLog and MyPlayer are built around one player rather than a team: the parent or the player logs their own shifts, shots, goals and assists, and the app tracks progression season after season. The other apps in this comparison are built for a team, a league or video.

Can I track stats from the stands?

With RinkLog, MyPlayer and MadPuck, yes: one button per event, from any seat. With GameChanger and iTrackHockey, a designated scorekeeper tracks for the whole team, and with BenchIQ the coach or manager scores from the bench. With TeamSnap, HockeyShift and SportsHeadz, entry happens after the game or by the league.

Does any app track ringette?

RinkLog tracks ringette in depth, with blue line passes, the official penalty scale and U10 to U19 brackets. MadPuck also lists ringette. The other apps in this comparison do not cover it or treat it as one sport among dozens.

Which app works in French?

RinkLog (app, site, report cards and emails), TeamSnap, Hudl and iTrackHockey list French in their store listings. GameChanger, MadPuck, MyPlayer, HockeyShift, SportsHeadz and BenchIQ are English only according to their listings, checked in September 2026.
