The real challenge of live tracking is not technical, it is the cadence of the game. A youth hockey player skates roughly twenty shifts of forty to sixty seconds, separated by a minute or two on the bench, and that alternation dictates everything: what you log while the puck is moving, what you repair while it is not. This page walks through that cadence, chapter by chapter, and what RinkLog's scoring app does at each step.
During the shift: log only what disappears
During the shift, you log ONLY what vanishes if you fail to catch it right then, because memory will not recover it three hours later: the start and end of the shift, a shot, a goal, an assist, a faceoff, a penalty. One thumb, eyes never down for more than half a second. Everything else waits. A parent trying to record the full action while it unfolds misses both at once, the events and their own child's game.

Ice time: the one stat you cannot estimate
Ice time is the most valuable statistic and the hardest to estimate from memory: a parent watching from the stands cannot hand-time every shift while also following the play. The ninety seconds a player spends catching their breath on the bench are for repairing what got logged too fast: reassigning a shot, adding the assist you missed, specifying where a chance came from. Long stoppages (a delayed penalty, a goal against, an ice repair) are the best windows of all, and a thirty-second review at the end of each period beats rebuilding the game from memory that evening by a mile.

Frequently asked questions
How many stats can you realistically track live from the stands?
Start with two or three (shifts, goals, assists) for two or three games, then add more gradually. Trying to log everything from game one almost always leads to missed events.
Can you track ice time without a separate stopwatch?
Yes: in RinkLog, one tap starts the shift, another stops it, and the app computes total and average per-shift time automatically, offline or online.
What if I miss a shift?
Nothing serious. That shift’s ice time is missing, that is all; the other stats of the game stay right. Between two shifts, the correction panel lets you add an event you saw too late. Over ten games, one missed shift changes no trend.
What about a goalie, there are no shifts?
