What does PIM mean in hockey?
Both acronyms mean the same statistic: penalty minutes, the total time a player has spent in the penalty box across a game or season. PIM is the acronym used on nearly every sheet and app; PUN is the French abbreviation of some Quebec sheets. A minor penalty is worth 2 minutes, a major 5 minutes, and a misconduct 10 minutes.
Is a high PIM total always bad?
Not necessarily. A few extra minutes from playing hard and physical is not the same as repeated undisciplined penalties late in close games. Reading PIM per 60 minutes and by penalty type tells the real story better than the raw total.
