Which stats should you track for a defenseman?

A defenseman is measured first by what he PREVENTS: blocked shots, hits (where allowed), takeaways and giveaways, +/- and chances against during his shifts. Offensive production (mostly assists) comes second, and his ice time, often the team’s highest, sets the scale for everything else.

Youth hockey’s classic trap: judging a defenseman on goals. A 4-point defenseman blocking three shots a game and finishing +12 is having a better season than a 15-point one getting caved in.
