Which stats should you track on the power play?

Special teams are measured at two levels: the team (power play efficiency percentage, penalty kill percentage) and the player (are they used on those units, and do they produce during those minutes). Being sent out on the power play or penalty kill is itself a statistic: it is the coach’s trust in the moments that decide games.

Formula

PP efficiency = power play goals ÷ opportunities × 100. PK rate = penalties killed without a goal against ÷ penalties taken × 100

At the individual level, useful tracking is simple: log shifts on the power play and penalty kill (RinkLog has Power play and Penalty kill buttons during shifts), then look at what share of production comes from those situations. A player scoring half their points on the power play has a very different profile from a 5-on-5 scorer, and both profiles have value.

RinkLog measures and computes this statistic automatically during your hockey, ball hockey and ringette games.
