These terms also structure the buttons of a good tracking tool: shift, slot shot, turnover, hit. - Slot (enclave): the paying zone between the circles, in front of the net, where most goals come from
- Shift (présence): the game segment from hopping the boards to returning to the bench, typically 45 to 90 seconds
- Forecheck (échec avant): offensive-zone pressure to win the puck back
- Backcheck (repli): the defensive effort skating back to your zone
- One-timer (une-temps): a shot fired directly off a pass without stopping the puck
- Turnover (revirement): a lost possession; a giveaway or a takeaway
- Odd-man rush (surnombre): a 2-on-1 or 3-on-2 attack
- Deke (feinte): a move to beat a defender or the goalie one-on-one
- Screen (écran): a player parked in front of the goalie to block their view
- Bodycheck (mise en échec): legal contact to separate an opponent from the puck
- Hat trick (tour du chapeau): three goals by the same player in one game
- Shutout (blanchissage): a full goalie game with no goal against
